| Horseplay began as a Chesterfield County Parks and
Recreation program in 1993 with three participants. In the Spring of
2005 Horseplay Therapeutic Riding Program, Inc. was formed as a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The program continues its
relationship with Chesterfield County as a co-sponsored program and
is held at a private boarding facility. Horseplay is an “affiliate
center” with NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped
Association). NARHA sets and monitors standard and safety
procedures, educates and certifies instructors and promotes the
benefits of therapeutic riding. Hundreds of volunteer hours, both
four-legged and two-legged, have been committed to this volunteer
driven program. Because of their dedication, the program has earned
many awards and recognition for its unique service to the community.
Helping Special Riders Hold the Reins of Life More than just a social and recreational activity, Horseplay offers
a special dimension of therapy for those with disabilities. Because
the human body movement during riding is similar to its movement
during walking, this motion allows riders to participate in an
activity which is not only enjoyable, but also physically
stimulating, challenging and therapeutic.
Rider benefits can include:
- Improved balance and coordination
- Greater strength and muscle control
- Increased range of motion
The self-control that riding requires usually results in a sense of
achievement, increased confidence and self-esteem. Improvements in
language and cognitive abilities and social skills may result as
